The Story Behind RAS
We started with a question:
“If paper cups are recyclable, why do they wash up on our beaches?”
“If paper cups are recyclable, why do they wash up on our beaches?”
Our founder, Rahil Sheth, went looking for answers,
- University of California
As a Biochemical Engineering graduate from the University of California, Rahil spent his former years in the US, studying and gaining work experience in the manufacturing industry, including a stint at a winery. These experiences fueled his intention to explore the manufacturing space in his home country, India.
- Mumbai, India
When he returned, a usual morning at a local beach left him both confused and curious. He noticed how the shoreline was covered in discarded paper cups. He wondered, if paper cups were recyclable, why did they show up as one of the most common forms of waste on our beaches? In fact, they contribute to the millions of tonnes of plastic floating in the oceans every year.
Upon research, he realised that we, as consumers, have been greenwashed into believing we are contributing to a cleaner world by using paper cups. But they were never entirely paper. They are lined with plastic, making them extremely difficult to recycle. When exposed to sunlight and heat, this layer releases methane into the atmosphere. It breaks down into microplastics that end up in our soil, water, and even our bodies.
When he joined his uncle’s printing business to assist with product development and research projects, finding an alternative to these plastic-coated cups became the instinctive next step. The in-house facilities for coating, printing, punching, and forming propelled this vision further and continue to be a core strength.
A study conducted by IIT Kharagpur and published in The Journal of Hazardous Materials indicates that just 15 minutes of exposure to a hot beverage can release up to 25,000 microplastics into a single 100 ml drink.
RAS Bio - The Inception
